Prepare
1. Tanning: Avoid 'spray' or 'self-tanning' products at all costs. They tend to leave a build up on unusual areas of the face that might not otherwise notice. *If you plan on going in the sun or using a tanning bed please do so at least 3-4 days in advance and do not over do it. A sunburn is very difficult to remove with retouching and never looks good in a headshot. Remember you want to look like you do when you show up at the audition.
2. Hair Color/Cut: Try to schedule this a week in advance as cuts can take time to grow out and color needs time to set and can sometimes leave a temporary mild stain on skin. Avoid trying 'new' cuts right before a shoot - you want to make sure the look you're shooting is the one you're going to be happy 'marketing' with for the next year (at least.)
3. Together we will discuss your objectives for the shoot. It is most important to me that you are comfortable and that we are both clear about what you want to achieve.
4. Read my article on "Casting Concepts ", talk to your agents, teachers and industry friends. Think about what kind of roles you want to go after.
5. Avoid drugs, alcohol, partying, and excessive salt or sugar for at least 24 hours before the shoot. This is important, it can show.
6. Get plenty of sleep the night before.
7. Leave plenty of time before and after. Avoid rushing.
8. Eat before, hunger can be a distraction!
9. Use Visine, even if you think your eyes aren't red. You may want to bring it with you as it works best if done right before. I have some here but it is best to use your own. You'll want to use it before auditions too. Believe me it makes a big difference.
10. Women - Arrive with a clean face for the make-up artist and hair done as you would for an audition.
11. Take time to organize your wardrobe and pack, don't forget to iron. Use the checklist below to help in deciding what to bring.
